Aztec dance group hosts 'reimagined' May Day festival

The May Day celebration returns after a two-year hiatus. But it will look a little different from past years. “We are celebrating May Day, with a festival, that fusion of the activism that many of us engaged in for decades, it's coming together with some of the traditions of the Heart of the Beast Theatre,” said Susana De Leon, who founded Kalpulli KetzalCoatlicue, a traditional Aztec dance group, 22 years ago.

Native women work to break the cycle of poverty, prison in Minnesota

Native women make up less than 1 percent of Minnesota’s overall population but are 20 percent of the state's female prison inmates. While many of the crimes that lead to jail or prison time are relatively small-time offenses — stealing, drug use, failure to show for a court date — the consequences of incarcerating Native women are enormous and cascading: children separated from mothers, metastasizing family poverty, financial and psychological costs that linger for generations.
