Photos: George Floyd remembered in Minneapolis

Photos from around Minneapolis show people joining together Thursday to honor George Floyd. His killing has sparked more than a week of peaceful protests demanding justice and widespread unrest in the Twin Cities and across the nation.
A crowd gathered at the site where Floyd died while in police custody, while others gathered to pay respects near North Central University, where friends and family held a private memorial service.

The memorial services to honor George Floyd are extraordinary: three cities over six days, with a chance for mourners to pay their respects in the communities where he was born, grew up, and died.
The first service is Thursday afternoon in Minneapolis. The service is private, and the family is providing a live stream. MPR News will carry it on air and online.

Minnesota authorities on Wednesday filed a more severe charge against former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin and charged the three other officers involved in the killing of George Floyd.

Klobuchar: Ellison charging other cops in Floyd killing, boosting Chauvin charge

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison will announce later Wednesday that he is boosting the charge against ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to second-degree murder in the killing of George Floyd, and charging the three other officers who were fired in the incident, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar said Wednesday.

Minnesota launches civil rights probe of Minneapolis police in wake of Floyd killing

Gov. Tim Walz said Tuesday the state will thoroughly investigate the Minneapolis Police Department for civil rights violations in the wake of last week’s killing of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody. The Human Rights Department is expected to probe the last 10 years of Minneapolis police practices.
