MPR Presents "Gales of November" Thanksgiving Weekend at the Fitzgerald Theater

Nov 19, 2015

Storyteller Kevin Kling and some of the region's top musicians and singers will mark the 40th Anniversary of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy with a performance of "Gales of November," the musical retelling of the acclaimed play "Ten November." The show runs Thanksgiving weekend, Saturday, Nov. 28 & Sunday, Nov. 29, at the Fitzgerald Theater.

"Gales of November" looks at the final voyage of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in a Lake Superior storm on November 10, 1975, killing all 29 men aboard. The tragedy has touched the hundreds of hearts and inspired many musicians, including Canadian songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, who told the story of Edmund Fitzgerald in his song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

Local singers Claudia Schmidt, Ruth MacKenzie, and Prudence Johnson, as well as beloved musicians Peter Ostroushko, Dan Chouinard, and Jeff Willkomm will join Kling on stage for the musical retelling of the story, which explores love, loss and the power of the most mysterious of Great Lakes.

The program features the music of composer Eric Peltoniemi and the narration and monologues of playwright Steven Dietz, from the original play.
