Classical MPR's 2020 Minnesota Varsity Showcase Event

Classical MPR is proud to spotlight our region’s top young classical performers and composers with the Minnesota Varsity program. Usually each season culminates with an exciting live showcase concert in the spring. We’re unable to gather to hear the musicians perform live this year, but we aren’t going to let that stop us from celebrating this incredible group of talented kids.
This year Classical MPR has special on-air and online Minnesota Varsity Showcase event, tune in to Classical MPR at 3 p.m. central Sunday, May 31 to hear it on the air, or enjoy it via video stream online.
4 cops fired after man dies in MPD custody; protesters, police clash

Protests turned violent Tuesday night as anger over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died Monday while in Minneapolis police custody, spilled out onto city streets. Four officers were fired earlier in the day. The FBI is investigating the incident.

Man dies in Minneapolis police custody; 4 cops fired; Walz wants answers

“We will get answers and seek justice,” Gov. Tim Walz said Tuesday after seeing video posted on Facebook, apparently shot by a bystander showing an officer kneeling on the man’s neck beside a police vehicle as the man says, “I cannot breathe. I cannot breathe.”
Minnesota Memorial Day ceremonies mark sacrifice, virtually

Across Minnesota, veterans’ groups and others remembered the sacrifices of those who served with pre-recorded elements common to such events, including speeches and rifle salutes by squads wearing protective face-coverings.

With many arts organizations and concert halls closing their doors due to concerns from the coronavirus, there has been a surge in performances offered for free online during the closures. A Memorial Day special Voices of Minnesota featuring the stories of two war survivors. Dan Olson interviewed World War II war prisoner and bomber pilot Richard Carroll from Eagan, and Sabina Zimering, the Polish Jew resident of St. Louis Park who evaded the Nazis with a false identity.

It was hailed as the 'Minnesota moonshot' — but why hasn’t antibody testing taken off?

One reason state health officials say they have been reticent to suggest widespread testing is reliability. In addition to the Mayo and University of Minnesota tests, private companies have also developed their own antibody testing. State officials say there are tests on the market that don’t produce reliable results.

Civil war scattered Mohamed Omer’s family more than 30 years ago. He spent his life trying to unscatter them. Just a few years after finally arriving in Minnesota, on April 29, he died of COVID-19.

'We’re all one paycheck away': More Minnesotans flocking to food shelves

As more Minnesotans lose their jobs because of COVID-19, local food shelves are seeing a surge in first-time visitors needing emergency food services — and the demand doesn’t look like it’ll let up anytime soon. About 1 in 3 Minnesotans say they’re worried about affording groceries and healthy food.
