Sustainability is a way of life for Indigenous communities in Minnesota—and beyond. Unique Indigenous nations and cultures have survived over time in large part because of sustainable practices passed down through the generations. Across Minnesota, Indigenous communities’ connections to land, nature, language and culture honor the delicate balance between the past, present and future. In doing so, Native communities are ensuring their ways of life are viable today, and for the seven generations.
How exactly are Indigenous communities of Minnesota reclaiming their lands and cultures, and their dreams for the future? What challenges, both old and new, pose the greatest threats to ensuring sustainability for future generations of Native people in Minnesota?

Many Minnesota hospitals are hitting their limits as COVID-19 cases spike once again. It’s especially challenging outside of the Twin Cities in places like Sauk Centre, where the hospital is at a breaking point.

Gladys flew off into a tree during a routine training session earlier this month and has not returned. "While she's likely to be within the 485-acre, forested Zoo, we wanted to make our neighbors aware," the zoo said, adding that Gladys is not a threat to public safety.

Small Change Story - Spurs Bar and Grill: Esperanza Lopez and Stephanie Lopez—mother and daughter—are the founders of Spurs Bar & Grill in Willmar, an agriculture-dominated city in West Central Minnesota.
The restaurant took them several years to open since they didn’t have much money. They did most of the remodeling and renovation themselves, with the help of a few trusted skilled trades people and by watching plenty of how-to YouTube videos.
“To be honest, I quit like 100 times,” says Esperanza. But, she adds, “since we open, we’re living our dream. Yeah, we don't regret it.”
