The My Name Is series from Performance Today sheds light on the influential legacy of black music and calls specific attention to the contributions of classical artists and musicians who are living and working today. You'll hear from the artists themselves -- their voices, their stories, their lives. The concept behind the series comes from the poem "We Speak Your Names," by Pearl Cleage, which honors the enduring achievements of African-American women. Just as the poem says, "We are here to speak your names because of the way you made for us," this series sheds light on those who are making a way in classical music today.
Danish composer Bent Sorensen has been named winner of the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, which doles out a rare prize of $100,000, one of the biggest monetary prizes among composition awards.
