MPR 50th Anniversary Poster Contest: We have a winner!

We are pleased to announce that the entry submitted by artist Jordan Taylor, of St. Paul, was chosen from among dozens of entries received from artists throughout the state. You can view his entry below or by clicking here.

A native of Hutchinson, Minn., Taylor is a freelance visual artist and active musician in the Twin Cities. Taylor graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2009 and served as an AmeriCorps volunteer before moving to St. Paul a few years ago.

An avid MPR News listener, Taylor says he drew on what has been his own “Minnesota” experience when creating the piece. He explained that if he were ever far away and tried to visualize what is iconic about Minnesota life, this would be the scene that comes to mind.

“I think for a lot of Minnesotans, Minnesota Public Radio is the link that keeps us connected, which is why I added the line ‘from Winona to Warroad,’” Taylor explained. “And of course, the image needed a little Minnesota kitsch with a tablecloth pattern in the background.”

Part of Taylor’s inspiration for the piece came from our state’s deep connection to water and lake culture. “I think Minnesotans think of ‘the lake’ like New Yorkers probably think of Central Park,” Taylor said. “It’s physical place but it’s also largely mental. It’s a constant presence in the back of our mind, and knowing it exists as an escape keeps us sane.”

“Of course I acknowledge that not all Minnesotans are fortunate enough to have the time or resources for this type of leisure. I am fortunate to have the chance to be inspired by the experience I describe.”

The art will be featured on MPR’s 50th anniversary commemorative calendar, which will be used as a membership thank you gift and will be displayed on the website throughout the year. Taylor will receive an $2,500 honorarium.

A panel of judges including representatives of the Minnesota arts community and MPR on-air personalities and staff selected the winner, after a public vote that narrowed the submissions down to 12 finalists. More than 1,000 people voted online as part of the selection process. The judges were: Megan Johnston, executive director, Rochester Art Center; Anne Dugan, executive director, Duluth Art Institute; Roger Cummings, chief cultural producer and co-founder, Juxtaposition Arts; Christina Chang, interim director and curator, Perlman Teaching Museum.; Ali Lozoff, director, MPR 50th Anniversary; Matt Becker, digital producer, MPR membership; Alison Young, host, Classical MPR; and Marianne Combs, senior arts reporter, MPR News.

Where will you share my entry? You might see your entry online at and related sites, or in social media. By entering the contest, submitters grant us the rights to display works through October 5, 2016.

The winner grants a full license to their work? Yes. If you plan to enter, be prepared to grant MPR license to the work in the event you win. This gives us rights to produce, print, and distribute the calendar and for our future display activities, including but not limited to historical/archive purposes.

Why did you make this change? We received feedback from individuals in the Twin Cities design community that gave us new perspective on art contests. While this contest is underway and will continue, we are making an effort to immediately respond to the rights concerns and will carry this perspective to future engagement opportunities.

Details: The submission must depict what the artist feels MPR represents to them or to the community. The submission may include MPR imagery and logos but MPR will not provide materials. MPR must be able to replicate the design in the final size of the calendar (16”X20”). The submission must consist of original art created by the submitting artist. The artwork must represent MPR in a manner consistent with MPR’s brand/mission.

Submission specifications:
16 x 20” finished art (MPR will create 6” calendar to add at the bottom).
Must be reproducible in standard 4-color process (CMYK).
All file submissions must be Tiff files (preferred), eps, jpg or psd format.
All files must be at least 300 dpi at full size (not exceeding 16” x 20”) and saved as CMYK (files not saved in CMYK will be converted).
Files must be no larger than 10 MB.
All final designs must include any fonts or images used; or submit files with outlined fonts and embedded images.
All art submitted must be artist’s own original artwork only. Any non-original logos, photos or images used in the design must be used only with the express written permission of the source and also grant MPR unlimited, free use of that logo, photo or image.

Official Rules


No contribution or purchase is necessary. Membership in Minnesota Public Radio (“SPONSOR” or “MPR”) is not a requirement to enter the MPR 50th Anniversary Contest (the “Contest”).
Enter between 12:01 a.m. CT on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 and 11:59 p.m. CT Wednesday, September 7, 2016 (the “Submission Period”). SPONSOR’s computer time-clock is the official timekeeper for all Contest purposes. SPONSOR has sole responsibility for determining if an entry has been successfully submitted. Any Submission that is not in compliance with these Official Rules may be disqualified, at the sole discretion of the SPONSOR.

An entry (a “Submission”) will be deemed to be submitted when SPONSOR receives both the completed entry form and all relevant file attachments. Evidence of submitting a Submission does not constitute evidence that SPONSOR received it.
Once a Submission has been submitted, it may not be revised, changed or edited. Incomplete entries or entries submitted by other means will not be considered.

Open only to legal residents of any one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia who are 13 years of age or older at time of entry. THIS CONTEST IS INTENDED FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE UNITED STATES ONLY. DO NOT ENTER THIS CONTEST UNLESS YOU ARE A UNITED STATES RESIDENT AT THE TIME OF ENTRY. The following persons are not eligible for the Contest:

  • Persons are employees of SPONSOR or its related organizations, including American Public Media (“Employees”).
  • Persons who were employees of SPONSOR or its related organizations (including American Public Media) at any time during the eight (8) months prior to the start of the Contest (“Former Employees”).
  • Immediate family, and persons living in the same household as the Employee or Former Employee, and
  • Other persons who do not meet the eligibility requirements for this Contest.
    Void where prohibited by law.

By entering the Contest, all Entrants grant a worldwide, exclusive, royalty-free license to SPONSOR and its related companies to display the Submission in any digital media, including but not limited to social media, through October 5, 2016. SPONSOR will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use. SPONSOR and/or its related organizations may use the Submission and/or name and likeness of any Entrant including for advertising, fundraising, promotional or publicity purposes as it relates to this contest without further compensation or approval.

Each Entrant further acknowledges and agrees that the SPONSOR reserves the right, in its sole discretion, not to use its Submission(s) at all; that Entrant has have the full legal right, power and authority to grant to SPONSOR the license provided for herein; that Entrant owns or controls the complete exhibition and other rights to the Submission for the purposes contemplated in this license; and that neither the Submission nor the exercise of the rights granted herein shall infringe upon or violate the right of privacy or right of publicity of, or constitute a libel or slander against, or violate any common law or any other right of, any person or entity.

The Winner, by accepting the honorarium, grants an irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide, exclusive, royalty-free license to SPONSOR and its related companies to reproduce, copy, distribute, publish, archive, and display the Submission in any other use in any media now or hereafter known, including but not limited to social media.

Entrants retain all rights in their Submission not granted to MPR herein.

Every eligible entry will be considered. Selection will be made according to the following process, or as otherwise determined by SPONSOR in its sole discretion.

FIRST ROUND REVIEW: The first panel of judges appointed by SPONSOR (the “First Round Judges”), in its sole discretion, will select a pool of Submissions from among all eligible entries to be made available for online public voting (the “First Round Submissions”). The First Round Judges’ decision will be made based on their assessment of the originality of the artwork and the Submission’s relevance to the MPR 50th Anniversary theme.

PUBLIC VOTE: Images of the First Round Submissions will be posted by MPR in an online gallery hosted within and made available for public voting from September 19-25, 2016 Members of the public may vote on the First Round Submissions, and may cast one vote per person per email address. Subsequent votes from the same person or email address will be disqualified.
From among the First Round Submissions, the submissions in the pool for Public Review, the twelve (12) that receive the highest number of eligible public votes will move on to the next round (the “Finalist Submissions”) and be presented to a second panel of judges appointed by SPONSOR (the “Final Judges”).

FINAL JUDGING: Selection of the winning Submission from among the Finalist Submissions will be made based on the Final Judges’ assessment of the originality of the artwork and the Submission’s relevance to MPR 50th Anniversary theme. This decision will be made no later than September 30, 2016.

The Entrant with the winning Submission (the “Winner”) will be contacted no later than October 5, 2016. Before making any public announcement, SPONSOR will confirm that the Winner and the winning Submission meet all eligibility requirements and that Winner chooses to accept the prize. This includes but is not limited to any legal proof of identification, completed tax forms, and execution of any liability and publicity releases.
One (1) Winner will receive a Twenty Five Hundred Dollar ($2,500) honorarium.
Expenses as a result of winning this prize, including but not limited to taxes, are the sole responsibility of the winner.

The Entrant acknowledges that by entering the Contest, the Entrant agrees it will not engage in any fraud with respect to the operation of the Contest, including but not limited to the use of another’s design, vote fraud, vote sharing, vote exchanges, vote purchases or any other methods that artificially increase the number of votes received for a Submission during the public voting period, as judged in SPONSOR’s sole discretion. Entrant certifies that Entrant and Entrant’s Submission meet all requirements established by the Official Rules and agrees to abide by all judging decisions. Any persons found cheating or otherwise violating the Official Rules, as determined in the sole discretion of SPONSOR, may be immediately disqualified from the Contest. By entering this Contest, Entrants agree to abide by these Official Rules as stated herein and the decisions of SPONSOR, which are final and binding in all matters pertaining to this Contest. Additionally, by participating, Entrants agree to comply with the terms of use and other contracts and policies governing any related website.
By participating in this Contest, Entrants agree that SPONSOR and its related organizations, agents and employees have no liability whatsoever for any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind which result from use of the prize, or by participation in the Contest, are not responsible for interrupted or unavailable network server or other connections, miscommunications, failed telephone or computer transmissions or jumbled, scrambled or misdirected Submissions or transmissions, or for phone, electrical, network, computer hardware or software or program malfunctions, failures or difficulties or for other errors, omissions, interruptions, or deletions of any kind whether human, mechanical or electronic or for any damage to any person’s computer related to participating in the Contest. Submissions with incorrect or inaccurate entry information, whether caused by Internet users or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest or by any technical, typographical or human errors that may occur in the processing of any entries in, or the administration of, this Contest. Persons found tampering with or abusing any aspect of this Contest, as solely determined by SPONSOR, may be disqualified and may be subject to prosecution. If in the sole judgment of SPONSOR, the Contest is compromised by viruses, bugs, non-authorized human intervention, harassment or other causes which otherwise corrupt or interfere, or may corrupt or interfere, with the administration, security, fairness, safety or intended facilitation of the Contest, SPONSOR reserves the right, in its sole discretion to discontinue, suspend, modify or terminate the Contest and proceed in a manner it deems fair and reasonable, which manner shall include the selection of winners from among eligible entries received prior to such discontinuation, suspension, termination or modification.
CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT TO UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE CONTEST IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS. SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, THE SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES OR OTHER REMEDIES FROM ANY SUCH PERSON(S) RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ATTEMPT TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. In the event of a dispute as to the identity of a winner based on an email address, the winning entry will be declared made by the authorized account holder of the email address submitted at time of entry. “Authorized account holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an email address by an internet access provider, on-line service provider or other organization (e.g., business, educational institution, etc.) that is responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address. SPONSOR MAKES NO WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR NON-INFRINGEMENT AS REGARDS TO A PRIZE OR ANY COMPONENT OF A PRIZE.

By participating in this Contest, each Entrant agrees to allow SPONSOR, and/or its designees the perpetual right to use his/her Submissions, name, personal information, photos and/or likeness, and statements for Contest, trade, commercial, entertainment, advertising and publicity purposes, at any time or times, in all media now known or hereafter discovered, worldwide, including but not limited to the Internet, without notice, review or approval and without additional compensation, except as and where prohibited by law.

Issues concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these rules shall be governed by the laws of the State of Minnesota. All disputes arising out of or connected with this Contest will be resolved individually, and without resort to class action, exclusively by the appropriate federal or Minnesota State Court located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Should there be a conflict between the laws of the State of Minnesota and any other laws, the conflict will be resolved in favor of the laws of the State of Minnesota. All judgments or awards shall be limited to actual incurred out-of-pocket expenses (excluding attorneys’ fees) associated with participation in this Contest and shall not include any indirect, punitive, incidental and/or consequential damages.

By participating in this Contest, a participant agrees to be bound by these Official Rules, and by all decisions of the SPONSOR. SPONSOR reserves the right to modify these Official Rules (e.g., add criteria or to clarify any or all of the rules) at any time during the Contest. Any such additions or clarifications will be posted with these rules, and SPONSOR will have no further obligation to announce or publicize such additions or clarifications.
