Music students (age 14-18 or 9th-12th grade) from across Minnesota, as well as those who live or attend school outside Minnesota but within the listening areas reached by MPR’s terrestrial radio signal, are invited to submit a recording of their instrumental or vocal performance of a classical or musical theater work, for evaluation by a panel of MPR judges. Student composers in the same age group were invited this year to submit an original score for flute or piccolo, clarinet, and alto saxophone, or for any solo or combination of those instruments, between 3 and 7 minutes in length.
All entrants become members of the Minnesota Varsity Team and are given exclusive entry to the Minnesota Varsity social community. Minnesota Varsity Team members have the opportunity to participate in special events and contests.
Ten instrumental and vocal entrants are chosen by MPR staff as Featured Artists in the semifinal round. Their performances are professionally recorded in MPR’s Maud Moon Weyerhaeuser Studio in St. Paul, are featured on Classical MPR and made available to stream online. Five Featured Composers are chosen by an American Composers Forum panel of judges. The Featured Composers attend a daylong workshop with composer Carol Barnett as Mentor; their works are performed by an ensemble and they receive assistance in polishing their compositions.
Four of the ten Featured Artists are then selected as Showcase Artists by a panel of celebrity judges and one is chosen by an online Audience Vote. Two Showcase Composers are selected from the five by American Composers Forum and the ensemble musicians.
The Showcase Artists will perform on stage at Ted Mann Concert Hall on the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at 3PM in a live radio broadcast. The Showcase Composers’ works will be premiered as part of the live Showcase concert broadcast.
