Minnesota dumps some 730 million pounds of salt on roadways each winter, and it's posing a major risk to our soil, lakes, streams and watersheds. How do we know?

Find out for yourself on Jan. 15 at the Citizen Science Winter Salt Lab, a co-production of MPR’s the Water Main and the Science Museum of Minnesota, with support from University of Minnesota’s Department of Earth Sciences.

Bring a melted snow or ice sample to the lab, located in the SMM’s Mississippi River Gallery, on Jan. 15 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) between noon and 4 p.m. Test your sample for dissolved solids, a good indicator for chloride – a main ingredient in winter salt. Talk with scientists, journalists and environmental experts about how we can all be smarter about salt use.
