Catharine Richert

Catharine Richert is based in Rochester, Minn., and covers Southeast Minnesota for MPR News. She previously covered politics and wrote PoliGraph, a fact-checking feature that got behind the spin in Minnesota politics. She has also contributed to MPR News coverage of the federal health care overhaul. Richert initially joined the MPR newsroom in 2011 after finishing a master's degree at the U of M's Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Previously, Richert worked for and Congressional Quarterly, where she covered the U.S. Senate, the 2008 presidential election and agricultural policy. She earned two writing awards for her coverage of the 2007 farm bill debate and has completed two journalism fellowships. She is originally from Chapel Hill, N.C., and completed her undergraduate degree at Oberlin College in Ohio. Those four years in the Midwest were poor preparation for Minnesota's winters, which she is learning to love through cross-country skiing and good humor. She lives in Rochester with her husband, son and daughter.
