MPR News Wins Prestigious Science Journalism Award for its Climate Change Reporting

Nov 10, 2015

(November 10, 2011)--Saint Paul, Minn. --- Today, the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards recognized MPR News for its special report "Climate Change in Minnesota". This national award, from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), recognizes journalists from around the world for excellence in science reporting geared towards a general audience. This is the first time MPR News has won this award.

"The AAAS Kavli Science award is a major honor for MPR News and reporters Dan Kraker and Elizabeth Dunbar and the digital and broadcast team that supported them," said Mike Edgerly, MPR News Director. "Elizabeth and Dan did what all good reporters do; they went to the scene of the story and told the story of climate change through lives of people who live it and document it. Climate change is a global phenomenon, but the story of its impact is best told from places like Waseca, Milan and the North woods. We are grateful to AAAS for this recognition."

Dunbar and Kraker led a special series of multi-media reports documenting Minnesota's changing climate from northern Minnesota, to farms and to the Twin Cities. Science News' journalist Tina Hesman Saey said, " The series is not just a 'woe is me' summary of the bad news on climate change, but a clear-eyed look at how conservationists are preparing for the reality of altered climate while still maintaining biological diversity and saving jobs."

Independent panels of science journalists picked the winners, who will receive their awards at the 2016 AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., in February. AAAS is the publisher of the highly-regarded peer-reviewl journal Science.
