Victoria Redel's debut novel follows the obsessional behavior of a young woman who goes to dangerous extremes to fulfill her desire for a child, but then follows as her obsession with keeping him close leads to tragedy.

The prize is named for Maria Gable, a sister at the College of St. Benedict in St. Jospeh, Minnesota, who championed and published many unknown writers in the '20s, '30s, and '40s. She published an early Hemmingway story as well as works by Betty Wahl and Flannery O'Connor.

Victoria Redel has published a book of short fiction, Where the Road Bottoms Out, and her original poems and translations from Spanish have been included in several anthologies. Her poetry and fiction have appeared in publications including Story Quarterly, Bomb magazine, and Harvard Review. She currently teaches in the MFA program at Vermont College. She received her MFA in creatrive writing from Columbia and her bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College. She now lives in New York City.
