P is for PerilP is for Peril
by Sue Grafton
Putnam, 2001

Author Sue Grafton started her mystery series with the letter A—as in A is for Alibi, and is now up to the letter P—as in P is for Peril. Grafton has promised to write a mystery for every letter of the alphabet.

Her latest book is the 16th adventure for her heroine Kinsey Milhone. Kinsey is a private detective who drives a beaten-up Volkswagen Bug, calls herself "Philip Marlowe in drag," and uses her wits to get herself out of trouble.

In P is for Peril Kinsey has been hired to solve the disappearance of Dr. Dowan Purcell. The case pits Kinsey against a bitter ex-wife, troubled children, and shady business partners. Dr. Purcell is an elderly physician who runs a nursing home that's being investigated for Medicare fraud. His ex-wife, Fiona, hires Kinsey to solve the case. Fiona thinks that he could be simply hiding out somewhere, especially since he's disappeared twice before. But Purcell's current wife Crystal believes he's dead.

(From the publisher) Since she first penned A is for Alibi in 1982, Grafton has continued working her way through the alphabet with a series of best-selling novels, each one earning her more fans and acclaim. She's also made it a point to continually top herself, creating with each new book more imaginative plots to keep her devoted readers in suspense. As Entertainment Weekly once said, "Unlike many detective series, Grafton's seem only to get better each time out." With P is for Peril, she once again proves that point.
