About the author
Baxer Black, poet, humorist, columnist, commentator, philosopher, songwriter, musician, and cattleman, is the nation's foremost cowboy poet and an entertainer extraordinaire. Raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico, he attended New Mexico St ate, where he studied animal husbandry. After earning a veterinary degree at Colorado State University, he began a career as a company vet for several large livestock operations. Black worked for years in the cattle business as a large-animal veterinarian before his life took a turn and he became an entertainer.
A regular speaker at many agricultural events throughout the mountain West, Black's popularity soon spread, with the itinerant poet currently averaging 100 performance dates each year. It was a poem, inspired by the tragedy of the 1988 Yellowstone Park fire, that caught the attention of National Public Radio, which began running many of his poems and stories, thus forging a relationship that has made Black a regular guest and NPR's "former large-animal veterinarian." He has also been featured in the New York Times, American Cowboy, and numerous other publications, and has made several appearances on television, including repeat appearances on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show and public television.
Black is the author of 13 books, including Coyote Cowboy Poetry, Cow Attack, Croutons on a Cow Pie, Cactus Tracks & Cowboy Philosophy, and his latest, A Cowful of Cowboy Poetry. In addition, he has produced several videos, one of which was awarded three Emmys, and writes a regular, syndicated column appearing in more than 100 publications nationwide. Black currently lives with his family in Benson, Arizona.
